Magic Shapes: cut your sandwiches, biscuits or fruit (like melon) with halloween biscuit cutters such as cauldrons, witches hats, stars or broomsticks.

Fruit Wands: edible fruit wands with grapes or berries topped with a watermelon star. You could even get the children to make these themselves as a party activity.

Magic Cupcakes: Serve starry cupcakes with our free printable cupcake toppers.

Hagrid’s Vegetable Plot: offer unusual veg like purple and yellow carrots, yellow and green tomatoes, purple sprouting broccoli etc

Sparkly Popcorn: edible glitter or popping candy on popcorn will make it sparkle or fizz!

Chocolate frogs: Freddo frogs will make good Honeyduke’s chocolate frogs.

Edible Wands: chocolate dipped breadsticks

Oreo Stack: stack dark biscuits like Oreos for an impressive centrepiece.

Snitches: Lindt gold wrapped white chocolates make good snitches

The Cake: Kit & Caboodle have a magical Stars Cake Decorating Kit to make decorating the cake a breeze.

HARRY POTTER PARTY ACTIVITIES

Aim to have a mix of active and calmer games. Here are some ideas… you can do most of them using items you already have around the house.

Active Party Games:

Wingardium Leviosa Balloon Race: Line the children up in two lines with a balloon for each line. Have a relay race keeping a balloon up in the air the whole time! (They could use wands to keep the balloons in the air, saying the levitation spell of course!) If the balloon touches the floor it has to go back to the beginning!

Quiddich: This requires a bit of preparation but the kids love it and it will keep them entertained for hours!
You need:

  • 1 red ball (Quaffle)
  • 4 black underinflated balloons (Bludgers)
  • 2 Broomsticks
  • 2 Goals (made with masking tape stuck to a wall or fence or hoola hoops, football goals – anything you like!)
  • Optional – 1 small yellow/gold ball such as a bouncy ball (Snitch).

Split children into two teams: (Hufflepuff, Gryffindor, Ravenclaw or Slytherin). Each team has

  • 1 Chaser (who tries to throw the red quaffle in the goal)
  • 2 Beaters (who throw black bludgers at the Chaser on the other team)
  • 1 Keeper (who tries to protect the goal).

When you want the game to end throw the snitch in the air and the team that catches it wins (or you could time games). You can swap positions and go again.

A simpler version is to hide a snitch somewhere and have a prize for whoever finds it.

Dragon Egg Balloon Race: Be careful it might hatch! Children line up in two teams with a balloon for each line. They race to pass the Dragon Egg balloon along the line, first over their heads and then through their legs! The team who finishes first wins.

Exploding Potion: Create a volatile potion! Add 5 mentos to a litre bottle of coke and get out of the way as it erupts out of the bottle!

Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Bean Roulette: Play Russian Roulette with Bertie Bott’s beans that come in every flavour including nappy and ear wax! Win points for managing to eat a bad flavour!

Flying Lesson:  Take photos of “Flying” Hogwarts students by taking a picture as they jump while on a broomstick. This picture would be great to give out with thank you cards.

Dragon Piñata: Have a defence against the dark arts lesson! Dragon pintatas are available to buy on amazon and come in a variety of designs. Simply fill with sweets and treats such as stickers, tattoos etc and confetti or torn up tissue paper. Then hang the piñata up and let the children whack it with a soft bat to break into the treats!

Quieter Party Games:

What Harry Potter Character am I?:  Write some Harry Potter characters on pieces of paper. One child has a character’s name, that they have not seen, fixed to their forhead with masking tape. They ask the other children yes or no questions (Am I a magic creature? Am I a muggle? etc. ) and try to work out who they are. If they guess correctly it is the next child’s turn.

Draw an Owl Balloon: Give the children a white balloon and a sharpie pen and get them to draw their own Hedwig owls. See below.

Transfiguration Class: Make magical creatures (from the book or the kids’ imaginations) out of Play-Doh.

Confusing Concoction Potion: Place 50g cornflour per child in a bowl. Add 55ml of water. (Optional: add a few drops of food colouring to the water if you want it coloured). Mix together and enjoy playing with the gloopy slime! (Do not dispose of down the sink – place in a zip lock bag and put in the bin).

Make Wands: collect sticks or buy plain chopsticks and  get the children to paint them with metallic glitter paint or glitter pens. If you want to prepare wands before the party Click here for a tutorial on how to use hot glue to make authentic looking wands.

Guess the Honey Duke’s Sweets in the Jar: to win the jar of sweeties!

Pass the Parcel: an old favourite! Kit & Caboodle have a handmade themed and coloured pass the parcels to save you the hassle of wrapping your own.

Water Beads: these are fun, little beads that expand in water to squishy balls that children love. There are water beads in the K&C Harry Potter Party Kit. Click here for more information about water beads.

HARRY POTTER PARTY DECORATIONS AND SET UP

Platform 9 3/4 brick wall hangingHarry Potter party decorationsHarry Potter Party Decorations

Create a Platform 9 3/4 wall hanging for the guests to walk through when they arrive at the party to really set the scene. You can buy brick wallpaper from Amazon. Hang two pieces of wallpaper next to each other over a doorway (stick with duck tape or similar) so that the children can come through the wall to the party room. You can stick up your Platform 9 3/4 sign in the free party printables next to the brick wall.

You could even make Harry Potter Letters by sealing envelopes addressed to Harry at Privet Drive with purple sealing wax and a letter H for Hogwarts stamper (or the first letter of the birthday child’s name). Have these sticking out of your front door letterbox or in the fireplace.

Harry Potter potionsHarry Potter owl balloonGiant balloon

Make a display of potions by adding household ingredients to old jars and bottles and giving them potion names like Dragon drool (hand soap), Gillyweeds (weeds from the garden in water), Exploding Fluid (Coke) or Troll Snot (green food colouring).

Balloons filled with helium or scattered on the floor will create wow factor. Play with scale with giant and tiny balloons. Try drawing your own owls on white balloons with a sharpie pen (or make this an activity for the children!) Fill the owl balloons with helium for flying owls or stick them to the wall or perch them on shelves. Ask the kids to dress up in school uniform to set the scene. K&C have Harry Potter ties (Gryffindor and Ravenclaw) so they can really feel like Hogwarts’ students!

Scatter confetti on the party table if you have it or place plastic cauldrons on the table and fill with popcorn, crisps etc.

Make your life easy on Party day by doing as much set up as possible the day before. Sort any food that can be done in advance. Inflate your balloons the night before (unless you are using helium).

We have free Harry Potter party printables: bunting, cupcake toppers and a front door sign, to help you decorate your party. K&C also have exclusive invitations to download and print.
